Shortly after being married in 2021, billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is divorcing her now husband, Dan Jewett, a Seattle-based science teacher from Lakeside School, a prestigious place.
Mackenzie organized an appeal for divorce in Washington on 26th September at the King County Superior Court. Dan Jewett worked as an instructor at a prestigious school attended by her children. She married him four years after divorcing Jeff Bezos who founded Amazon, to whom she was married for 25 years. The former couple had four children together. After her divorce from Bezos, Scott amassed a squad of consultants and embarked on silently making multimillion-dollar donations to nonprofit organizations that amounted to further than $12 billion in just a matter of three years.
According to reports in the court, Mr Jewett did not protest against the divorce. They have both agreed to the property division provided in the separation contract, of which details are unknown to the public. Both of them will continue living in Seattle.
During their marriage, they both had a philanthropic partnership which seems to now no longer be in place. Dan Jewett’s name and letter which was previously present on the Giving Pledge site(a non-profit where the wealthy donate their money for causes or in their wills) alongside MacKenzie have now mysteriously disappeared along with his name from the medium post about their gift-giving the previous year. The non-profits which were donated to as well only seemed to thank Ms Scott in recent times. Scott has additionally deleted Jewett’s name from her author bio on Amazon.
According to Angela Loihl who was acquainted with Jewett, he was very earnest and not at all edgy. Angela and Jewett’s mutual friend also agreed that when they found out he was getting married to Scott, he was perfect for the philanthropist since he had no greed at all. When they initially got married in California around March 2021, they took their friends and family completely by surprise with the news. Given Ms Scott’s fame, the news caught hold of it swiftly and it began to spread like wildfire. Soon after Dan Jewett finished his term in the school and took leave as he felt that he was becoming a distraction.
Ms MacKenzie had built up a reputation of becoming arguably the most influential philanthropist in the world, attempting to distribute most of her wealth to various causes such as LGBTQ equality, racial equality, climate change and more. In May 2019, she undertook a pledge with the Giving Pledge promising to distribute most of her wealth throughout her lifetime or in her will.
Although his Giving Pledge is no longer aside from Scott’s, in his Giving Pledge letter dated March 2021, Jewett wrote that he was grateful for the amazing privilege he had to partner in giving away so many assets that had the potential to do much good when distributed.
Both Ms Scott and her lawyer have declined to publicly share about her donations, declining many interview invitations from news companies. Likewise attempts to contact Dan Jewett and his lawyer about the divorce were also terribly unsuccessful.
