Wordle is a word game, where a player gets six turns to guess a five-letter word. Wordle is the smart version of the old pen and paper game Jotto.
Steps to play Wordle
Wordle is a one-player online game, where the player has six chances to guess the word. Once the player clicks the letters, the letters will turn in different colours, which will symbolize different meanings. The letters will appear in three different colours; Green, Yellow, and Gray, and each colour have meaning, green colour means that the letter you entered is perfectly correct and is in the correct space. The yellow colour means the letter entered is correct but is in the wrong space and the grey colour represents the letter entered is incorrect. This game aims to guess the word in minimum attempts.
The new feature of Wordle
Since the time Wardle launched Wordle became viral eventually and people loved the concept of per day per puzzle as it created suspense and a craze to play more but the game become a big deal when the developer introduced a new feature “share” in Wordle.
The new share feature was added in December 2021 this new share feature allows you to copy the grid of the puzzle which can then be posted on the social platform. Since the time this feature was added, people started posting their puzzles on the social platform and this is the reason that we are seeing the colourful grid on Twitter more often.
Creator and Creation
Wordle is created by Josh Wardle, a Welsh Software Engineer. Josh created the prototype of Wordle in 2013 which was inspired by the code-breaking game Mastermind. The prototype of Wordle let the players play the game consecutively and the word list was unfiltered. Initially, the game used 13000 possible five-letter words in English, but later Josh Wardle found out that some people are facing difficulty to guess the less common words and made the guessing random like in mastermind. In 2014 Josh Wardle finished the work on this prototype and kept this aside.
Later while working for The New York Times during the COVID-19 pandemic, Josh Wardle remembered his prototype. At that time Josh and his partner were busy working on The New York Times, Daily Crossword Puzzle and Spelling Bee. In January 2021 Josh launched the game on the web. Josh Wardle named the game Wordle as the pun in his surname.
At first, Josh shared the game with his partner, later he shared it with his relatives and they got obsessed with Wordle. After that Josh shared it with some of his friends, which gained attention and the game became viral in mid-October, 2021.
On January 2022, over 300,000 people played Wordle. From January 1 to January 13, 1.2 million Wordle results were shared on Twitter.
The game lets the player, play one puzzle each day, and thus people want to play more.
In an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today, Josh Wardle said that he doesn’t know each day’s word, so he also enjoys the game as we do.
