Austin, Texas- A Texas jury ordered Alex Jones to compensate of $45.2 million to the parents of a Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victim as punitive damages for spreading the lie that they helped stage the massacre
The jury announced its decision after found liable Mr. Jones for defaming the victim families while spreading the lie that the shooting had been part of a government plot to confiscate Americans’ firearms and that the victim families had been complicit in the scheme
Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin the parents of Jesse, who was killed in the attack in Newtown’s attorney, Wesley Ball, had asked the jury to award them $149.5 million to reach the $150 million they initially sought.
Ball mention that only such big sum would be enough to “take the bullhorn away” from Jones.
The Jones’ attorney that repeatedly said that the Sandy Hook shooting was a hoax, asked jury to award Heslin and Lewis only $1.
The jury decided this only whether Jones, who already has been found liable by a judge for not handing over critical evidence before the trial began, has to also pay Jesse’ parents for the emotional distress and reputational damage cause by his false claims.
Alex Jones has tried to use bankruptcy to avoid to pay to Sandy Hook shooting victim’s parents. His company Free Speech Systems, which operates Infowars, has filed for bankruptcy on Friday halfway through the trial.
Jones shown that any damage awarded over $2million will sink channel despite financial detail that presented showing the channel raked in close to $800000 a day.
