The UVA shooter is now in police custody. The killer has killed three football players and shot two more people they were injured following the shooting at the University of Virginia late Sunday night, campus police and university president Ryan confirmed early Monday.
The suspected shooter, Darnell Jones is now in police custody after a manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours.
Darnell Jones was a student at the university, as well as a former football player. There were three counts of using a handgun on Jones and three charges of second-degree murder. UVA Police Chief Timothy Longo said to reporters during a press conference.
The university president said in a press conference that the shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. ET on a bus that was full of students returning from a field trip.
Police said the three victims, who are all juniors and members of UVA’s football team, were found dead on the scene they were D’Sean Perry, a linebacker from Miami, Fla, Devin Chandler, a wide receiver from Virginia Beach, Va.; and Lavel Davis, a wide receiver from Dorchester, S.C.;
The University officials have not released the names of two additional victims yet, who are being treated for injuries; one is in critical condition.
University President Jim Ryan said, ” This is an unimaginably sad day for our community. The entire university community is grieving this morning. My heart is broken for the victims and their families and for all who knew and loved them.
Public transportation routes to campus were suspended and also classes and extra activities were cancelled on Monday. Public schools in the surrounding Albemarle County were closed for the day.
What happened earlier in UVA
A shooting happened Sunday late at night on the campus of the University of Virginia. Police identified a suspect, as Christopher Darnell Jones.
Darnell Jones grew up in Richmond and played football at two area high schools.
The university’s emergency department reported on its Twitter account: “ACTIVE ATTACKER firearm reported in the area of Culbreth Road. RUN HIDE FIGHT” at 10:42 p.m.
UVa sophomore Gunter, 19, was watching a lecture in her dormitory at around 10:15 p.m. when she heard six gunshots ring out. She lives in the International Residential College and can see Culbreth Road from her window.
She told to the 350 other residents in her building to stay inside by sending a message.
Gunter said, “I just have no words this is insane.”
