History of Veterans Day
President Woodrow Wilson on 11 November 1919, issued a message to his countrymen on the first Armistice Day, in which he expressed what he felt the day meant to Americans:
In 1954, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day, at the urging of major US veteran organizations.
Veterans Day is different from Memorial Day, a US public holiday in May. Veterans Day celebrates all US military veterans, and Memorial Day honours those who have died while in military service. One more military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, honours those currently serving in the US military. Women’s Veterans Day is recognized by a growing number of US states that honour specifically women who have served in the US military.
